Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Management: Using Agrometeorological Data to Make Livelihoods More Resilient
High Andean and Amazonian communities in Peru have limited access to agrometeorological information that would allow them to protect their livelihoods (crops and livestock) against the impacts of climatic events. In this scenario, Save the Children has implemented the Agroclimatic Information System (SIA), a tool that allows forecasts to be obtained on rainfall and droughts and the impact they would have on various types of essential crops at the national level. Experience in the use of this tool shows that access to meteorological data allows communities to mitigate the effects of climate change and better manage possible emergencies arising from major climate events, moving from a humanitarian response approach to a model of anticipatory actions. There are, however, limited funds for the development of tools.
